What’s the national dish of Egypt, you ask? The answer must be Koshary! It’s a combination of pasta, rice, lentils, tomato sauce, chickpeas, fried onions, garlic sauce…etc. Now that’s a national dish! The most famous Koshary can be found at Abou Tarek in Cairo.
The restaurant was super busy, but very efficient. We were seated straight away. The only main dish they serve is Koshary, so we both ordered one! We also ordered desserts – Rice Pudding and Sweet Abu Tarek. The Koshary was served quickly. The waiter very enthusiastically explained the dish and showed us how to eat it by mixing the ingredients together in a certain way. This really elevated the dining experience by making it interactive.
The Koshary doesn’t look too impressive, but it tastes amazing! The deep-fried onions are very fragrant; the tomato sauce is rich and natural. It showed the uniqueness of Egyptian food and flavours. The rice pudding is full of milk flavor and not too sweet. The Sweet Abu Tare is a bit sweet, and the waiter will sprinkle cinnamon powder on top to enhance the flavour.
Abou Tarek is not far from the Egyptian Museum; about a 10-minute walk. After visiting the museum, I recommended coming here for lunch. The restaurant has top-notch, speedy service, large portions, and tons of character. You definitely won’t be disappointed dining in Cairo at Abou Tarek!!
