Manchester, also known as “Man City,” is a major city in the northwest of England. Since it’s not too far from London, my friend and I decided to take a short two-day trip. We arrived on a Saturday around noon. After checking into our hostel, we followed the front desk’s recommendation and headed to English Lounge NQ for lunch.
The restaurant was close to the bus stop where we got off. After check-in, walking back wasn’t far, and the nearby shopping area was lively and easy to explore. When you enter, you’ll see a bar on the ground floor. If you’re here for a meal, head upstairs via the stairs on the left. The second floor felt like a different place—quiet, tidy, and decorated in a classic British style.
My first thought was, “This place looks fancy—maybe £40 per meal?”
Surprisingly, the prices were quite reasonable.
We originally came for the traditional British Sunday Roast, but when we looked at the menu, we didn’t see roast beef. We asked the server, and he laughed, “Sunday Roast is only on Sundays—today’s Saturday 😆”
So yes, we went on the wrong day and got teased a little.
The next day, Sunday, we came back—and this time, the Sunday Roast menu was available. Prices ranged from £11–£15, which felt fair.
- Rioja Temp: A red wine recommended by the server. Light aroma with a bit of grape sweetness and mild alcohol. A good match for the roast beef.
- Traditional Roast Beef: I had the roast beef, which was tender and slightly crispy on the edges. It came with Yorkshire pudding, vegetables, and gravy. The flavours worked well together. The downside? It cooled down quickly—I preferred it warm. The parsnip (the one that looks like a fry) wasn’t really my taste. Still, overall, it was a decent dish.
- Roast Loin of Pork: My friend ordered this. It was good—served with apple sauce that added some sweetness and balance to the pork. The thin, crispy skin gave it a nice texture. Like the beef, it also cooled down fast.
Overall, this was a pleasant dining experience. The setting was clean, the prices fair, and the vibe casual. The wine definitely enhanced the meal. In general, I’d say it was good—but if I compare it to the Sunday Roast I had in Oxford, I still liked the one in Oxford better.
