When visiting the UK, enjoying a traditional English breakfast is a must! This time, following a friend’s recommendation, we chose one of London’s most popular brunch spots – The Breakfast Club Soho. Not only is this place a favorite among locals, but it also attracts plenty of tourists, especially the Soho location, where long queues are a daily occurrence.
The Breakfast Club has several locations in London, but we opted for the Soho branch. Its bright yellow exterior is eye-catching and easy to spot amidst the busy streets. However, the high demand meant we had to wait in line for nearly an hour before getting seated. I’d recommend arriving early to avoid the peak rush.
The interior is cozy, with limited seating, and the walls are decorated with a variety of messages and memorabilia, giving the place a laid-back and quirky vibe. We were seated near the entrance, with a clear view of the bar, but the crowd outside waiting for a table did add a bit of pressure.
The Breakfast Club offers a variety of classic English breakfast options, with the most popular being The Full Monty – a hearty platter that includes bacon, sausages, black pudding, eggs, potatoes, beans, grilled tomatoes, and toast.
One of the most unique items is the black pudding, a sausage-like food made from animal blood, offal, and minced meat. It was invented in the 13th century by a French chef named Boudin, whose name inspired the term “pudding.” Today, black pudding remains a staple in British cuisine. It’s similar to Taiwanese pig’s blood cake, without a strong taste but quite salty.
- The grilled tomatoes tasted pretty much like plain tomatoes.
- The bacon was also very salty and best enjoyed with toast.
- The special fried potatoes were delicious.
- For the eggs, you could choose from sunny-side up, scrambled, or poached. Since I only recognized the word “sunny-side up,” that’s what I ordered 😆.
If you’re dining solo, you can go for The Half Monty, which excludes the black pudding, potatoes, and mushrooms. However, the price difference is minimal, so I’d suggest The Full Monty for better value. My friend ordered the Eggs Royale, which features smoked salmon, a sunny-side-up egg, and special sauce sandwiched between bread. The combination of salty salmon, runny egg yolk, and bread was an explosion of rich flavors. Another friend went for Eggs Florentine, which replaces the salmon with spinach, making it a great choice for veggie lovers, though it’s slightly milder in taste.
If you’re visiting London, you’ve got to experience a classic English breakfast at least once, and The Breakfast Club should be at the top of your list. While the wait might be long, the delicious food and unique dining atmosphere make it all worthwhile. If you don’t mind the queue, this place is definitely worth trying!
