BBQ Chicken is a popular Korean fried chicken chain with multiple locations across Metro Vancouver. Since we live near North Burnaby, it has become our go-to place whenever we crave Korean fried chicken. This particular branch is conveniently located on bustling Hastings Street, making it easy to reach by bus. However, parking can be a bit tricky — you’ll have to find street parking right in front of the shop or park a bit farther at a public lot.
As soon as you step inside, the shop’s modest size is overshadowed by the mouthwatering aroma of freshly fried chicken that immediately captivates your senses. One of the best deals here is the Special Combo. It comes with 3 different flavours of fried chicken — Golden fried, Black pepper, and Secret sauce — along with fries and corn salad. The portion size is generous, leaving two people happily stuffed.
- Golden Fried Chicken: Delightfully crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, this simple, classic flavour is finger-licking good.
- Black Pepper Fried Chicken: Building on the original flavour, a generous sprinkle of black pepper adds a bold, aromatic kick, perfectly complementing the crispy chicken.
- Secret Sauce Fried Chicken: A thicker, sticky sauce with a hint of sweetness coats the chicken. Personally, I didn’t find this flavour particularly appealing, but it may suit other tastes.
- Fries: Freshly fried to perfection, they are wonderfully crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
- Corn Salad: decent.
We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve visited BBQ Chicken, but our first experience remains unforgettable. Being adventurous, we ordered the Hot Spicy flavour, which was marked with 4 chili pepper icons. We had no idea what we were getting into! The fiery heat was so intense that we kept asking the staff for more water, barely managing to finish the plate. A staff member later told us that even Koreans find it overwhelmingly spicy — quite the bold choice for first-timers!
