After a full day of hiking, we were completely exhausted and absolutely starving. On the way home, we stumbled upon Pizzeria Spacca Napoli, a pizza place known for its outstanding reputation and multiple awards. It’s so popular that reservations are usually required—but lucky for us, we came during off-peak hours and were seated right away.
Even though it wasn’t a typical rush hour, the place was still packed, both indoors and out. It’s clear this spot has built quite a loyal following—and for good reason.
The menu offers a variety of classic Italian dishes, but what really stands out are their award-winning pizzas. These aren’t your average pies—the flavour combinations are bold and creative, and the prices reflect that. Since it’s not every day we’re in the area, we decided to splurge a little and try one of their most famous creations.
Cafonata Pizza – Winner of the 2020 Vancouver Pizza Challenge
This was clearly the star of the menu! Built on a San Marzano DOP tomato base, it features spicy Calabrese ’nduja, sausage, roasted potatoes, fior di latte mozzarella, Auricchio provolone, and a ricotta-stuffed crust. The flavours were bold, layered, and inventive. The pizza itself was perfectly baked—crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside.
That said, the overall flavour profile leaned a bit heavy on spices and cheese. While it was creative and packed with personality, the intensity slightly overshadowed the simplicity that makes pizza so comforting. If you’re someone who loves trying unique and daring flavour combinations, this is definitely one to try.
Rigatoni al Pomodoro – A Classic Done Right
This dish may look simple, but it was surprisingly memorable. Made with just tomato sauce, fresh basil, and a generous dusting of parmigiano reggiano, this pasta lets the quality of the ingredients shine. The rigatoni was perfectly al dente, and the balance of tangy tomato and savoury cheese made it a comforting, feel-good bowl of pasta.
Nonno’s Tiramisu – The Perfect Ending
This dessert was everything a tiramisu should be—aromatic, well-balanced, and not overly sweet. The espresso-soaked ladyfingers paired beautifully with the whipped mascarpone and bittersweet cocoa powder, offering a rich yet light finish to the meal. Each bite was smooth, flavourful, and had just the right amount of contrast.
Overall, this meal was a real treat. The award-winning pizza certainly delivered in terms of creativity, though next time, I’d love to try one of their simpler, more classic options to experience the essence of their pizza-making craft. Whether you’re a die-hard pizza fan, a pasta lover, or just someone who appreciates a great Italian dessert, Pizzeria Spacca Napoli is well worth a visit to see (and taste!) what all the buzz is about.
