If you’re visiting Vancouver Island, a day trip to Victoria is a must! The capital of BC, this vibrant city offers stunning coastlines, historic Chinatown, and a lively downtown where you can experience the blend of history and modern culture. One food spot you simply can’t miss is the popular Red Fish Blue Fish. Located right by the waterfront on Victoria’s harbor, this fish and chips spot has a few outdoor seats, allowing you to enjoy your meal while taking in the beautiful harbor views. I’ve visited twice already—on a weekday, the wait was around 20 minutes, but on a long weekend, we waited over an hour and were more than ready to eat when our turn came!
We ordered the Chowder Soup to start, which was ready quickly. This chowder, made with coconut, corn, and Pacific white fish, offers a rich tropical flavor with a hint of sweetness and tender fish pieces. It’s perfect for those who enjoy a bit of island-inspired taste, although I found it bit too sweet. For our main course, we had the Fish and Chips (Pacific Cod)—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The cod was perfectly fried, with a crunchy batter and juicy fish, made even better with their rich tartar sauce. The side salad had a refreshing sweet-and-sour flavor that balanced the meal nicely.
Red Fish Blue Fish is a popular choice in Victoria, but if the line is over an hour long, it may not be worth the wait. However, if it’s your first time in Victoria and the line is manageable, it’s definitely worth a try—you won’t be disappointed! Note that the dining experience here is quite simple, with limited outdoor seating and strong sunlight, so be sure to bring sunscreen. Plus, keep an eye out for seagulls nearby; they add a bit of fun and challenge as they try to swoop in on your food!
