Philly’s Famous Cheesesteak: Geno’s Steaks

Cheese steak is a popular comfort food found across the U.S. and even internationally, but its roots are in Philadelphia. Since there are many cheese steak spots in the city, I asked the hostel staff for recommendations. They narrowed it down to two places: Geno’s Steaks and Jim’s South St.. One staff member preferred Geno’s Steaks, while the other backed Jim’s South St. The debate got a bit heated 😂

Not sure which was better, I decided to try both.

Originally, I planned to visit Jim’s since it’s closer to downtown. But when I saw the long line outside, I changed my mind and went to Geno’s instead—even though it was farther. After walking for a while, I arrived at Geno’s and saw that the line there was just as long 💢

Geno’s only has outdoor seating and no restrooms. It feels like a typical American fast-food stand. Many people just grab their food and go. It was freezing that day, and waiting in line was a real test of patience. While in line, I looked around—walls were filled with badges, photos of celebrities, and old pictures, reflecting its long history since 1966.

After about 15 minutes, it was finally my turn. Geno’s offers three cheese options for your steak: Whiz, American, and Provolone. I went with American. After ordering, you can get drinks or fries from another window, or just leave with your sandwich. There’s also a condiment station with various sauces.

Inside the sandwich was sliced grilled beef and onions. The bread was slightly firm and chewy. The beef was a bit dry, but the onions were sweet. The overall flavour was simple—not amazing, but decent. Not too greasy either.

After eating, I walked back toward downtown. On the way, I passed by Jim’s again and, since I still had room, I gave that one a try too.

In the end, Geno’s Steaks is a long-running spot with a distinct vibe. It’s a good choice if you like a straightforward sandwich and outdoor-style dining. If you’re in Philly, try both Geno’s and Jim’s—then decide for yourself which one you prefer!
