Da Tie Tofu Pudding, the name of DA TIE in Chinese means forge, I heard that the shop owner used to work as a blacksmith before switching to selling tofu pudding for personal reasons. The name “Da Tie Tofu Pudding” symbolizes the spirit and attitude required in making tofu pudding—enduring high temperatures, paying attention to heat control, and maintaining the perseverance needed to create delicious food through multiple steps, relying on experience and craftsmanship. This knowledge made me sit up straight and truly savor the care and effort the owner puts into his creations.
This time, I visited the Da Tie Tofu Pudding JingCheng branch, located across from the West District Library in Taichung City. Although the shop is small with limited seating, the clean and bright environment makes it a very comfortable place to be. The store is decorated with many cute metal boxes, all handcrafted by the owner, each one filled with creativity. The menu offers a variety of choices beyond tofu pudding, including grass jelly, purple rice, sesame paste, and a wide selection of toppings like peanuts, red beans, pearls, snow lotus seeds, and barley, making it hard to choose. The shop also offers small snacks like ham and cheese toast, perfect for those looking to fill up.
I ordered the Signature Grass Jelly, paired with taro balls, snow lotus seeds, red beans, pearls, and taro. The taro balls were chewy and springy, the snow lotus seeds added a hint of sweetness, and the grass jelly was rich in flavor. Adding a small milk ball enhanced the dessert with a subtle creaminess, creating a perfect combination! I also had the Ham and Cheese “welded” Toast, which is quite different from regular toast. The edges of the toast are cut off, with ham and cheese inside, and then the edges are sealed and cut in half. The cheese flavor was so rich that it completely overshadowed the ham, and the toast itself was grilled, making it crispy and crunchy. However, the toast was a bit dry, so pairing it with the grass jelly was an absolute match!
Da Tie Tofu Pudding has 4 branches in Taichung, and the JingCheng branch I visited this time did not disappoint. On the contrary, it surprised me in many ways. Not only did I enjoy the owner’s meticulously crafted desserts, but I also fell in love with the iron bento boxes in the shop. This place is more than just a tofu pudding shop—it’s a small haven for appreciating life, offering both visual and culinary delights. If you have the chance to visit Taichung, you must come to Da Tie Tofu Pudding to experience the dedication and craftsmanship that go into every dessert and feel the artisan spirit infused into each sweet treat.
