LiaoChangTu Free-range Chicken Restaurant is hidden deep within the mountains of Baguashan. Established in 1976, this restaurant has been serving up delicious food for over 40 years. It has always been our family’s top choice for gatherings, and I’ve been enjoying its offerings for over 20 years, practically growing up with its flavors. Since this restaurant is not located on a major road, we always drive about 10 minutes from County Road 139 to get there. It’s remote, and not many people know about it.
As soon as you step into LiaoChangTu, you’re greeted by a parking lot surrounded by seasonal flowers and plants, allowing you to feel at one with nature. The starfruit here is a signature item, and the restaurant’s free-range chicken is renowned for being fed on starfruit, hence the name “Starfruit free-range chicken.” Our group of 8 adults and 2 children ordered 7 dishes, 1 soup, 1 fried rice, and 1 fried noodle. Although the prices weren’t listed on the menu, the total came to only about $2,500 NT (around $80 USD), which is very reasonable compared to other high-end restaurants. Here are some of the standout dishes we ordered:
- Sweet Potato Balls with Taro Filling: Small and cute, these bite-sized treats are packed with a solid filling. They’re so addictive that it’s hard to stop eating them.
- Anoectochilus Soup: The soup is infused with the unique aroma of Anoectochilus, sweet and refreshing without being greasy. The chicken used in the soup is free-range chicken, with the meat and broth perfectly blending. The chicken is tender and elastic, and each bite releases the delicate flavor of the Anoectochilus.
- Cold Chopped Chicken: This is LiaoChangTu’s signature dish, featuring free-range chicken raised by the owner. The meat is firm and tender, with a natural sweetness that shines through with each bite. A simple dip in soy sauce enhances the flavor even more.
- Stir-Fried Cabbage: Crispy and delicious, it’s neither greasy nor overcooked, with a fresh, sweet taste.
- Deep-Fried Chitterlings: For those who love the unique taste of intestines, this dish is a delight. Paired with pepper salt and scallions, it’s so good that even when we were already full, we couldn’t stop eating it.
- Egg Omelette with Basil: The strong aroma of basil blends perfectly with the fried egg, elevating the flavor of the entire dish.
- Mountain Daylily: Unlike regular daylilies, mountain daylilies have a more crunchy texture and are highly nutritious.
- Stir-Fried Wild Boar Meat: Tender and juicy, with a chewy texture, this dish is perfect for meat lovers.
Finally, you must try the starfruit served in the restaurant, especially when paired with plum powder for an even richer taste. If you like the starfruit, you can also purchase some to take home. LiaoChangTu Free-range Chicken Restaurant focuses on homegrown ingredients, particularly free-range chicken, wild boar meat, and various mountain delicacies, offering diners an authentic mountain culinary experience. Here, you can enjoy delicious food while relaxing and unwinding—making it an ideal spot for family and friend gatherings. Looking for a restaurant where you can indulge in great food at great value? LiaoChangTu Free-range Chicken Restaurant is definitely the place to go.
