This famous midnight snack stall Uncle A-Dou’s Frozen Taro is located at the intersection of Chenggong Road and Xingmin Street, also near the Zhonghua Night Market in Taichung. It’s not very noticeable, so I always look for the “Wanlai Uncle” sign to find it. The equipment at Uncle A-Dou’s Frozen Taro stall is simple, with four toasters lined up to toast bread simultaneously. A few tables and chairs are set up under the overhangs of storefronts for customers who want to dine in. Usually, there’s a long line starting around 8 PM, but today I arrived earlier, around 6 or 7 PM, so the crowd wasn’t too large yet.
For Taichung, the prices here are very affordable. Although frozen taro is the signature item, I ordered the mung bean sweat soup due to the cold weather. The soup wasn’t overly sweet, with just the right flavor, and they were a lot of mung beans in the soup. Now, let’s talk about the most popular item at this stall—the grilled toast! The toast is filled with strawberry jam and butter. Although these two ingredients might seem like an odd combination, they surprisingly complement each other well. If you’re not fond of this pairing, you can also eat the two slices of toast separately.
This stall is the top choice for a midnight snack when you’re feeling hungry. The prices are reasonable, and you can have a simple, filling snack. Although the long lines might be a bit daunting at times, the high turnover rate ensures that you won’t have to wait too long to enjoy your delicious snack.
