Scallion Pancakes in Keelung: Chou Jia Breakfast

I remember my first visit to Keelung about 6 months ago when a friend took me to try Chen Jia Breakfast. The experience of eating those tiny scallion pancakes and sipping wonton soup on a scorching June day left a lasting impression on me about Keelung’s breakfast scene. So this time, I asked my friend to take me to another renowned spot—Chou Jia Breakfast(周家蔥油餅).

Chou Jia Breakfast is located on Xin’er Road in Keelung. Since there’s no obvious signboard for the shop, the best way to find it is by spotting the long line of people waiting. Chou Jia Breakfast is somewhat similar to Chen Jia Breakfast, as they’re also rolled up. However, Chou Jia Breakfast is slightly larger, and their cooking method is unique—they are first pan-fried until half-cooked, then baked in an oven. This pan-frying and baking process makes the scallion pancakes less greasy and gives them an irresistible crispiness.

After waiting for more than 10 minutes, it was finally our turn! The first dish served was the egg pancake, which at first glance looked like a fried egg. But when flipped over, you’ll find that it’s actually wrapped around a scallion pancake, similar to Chen Jia style. The pancake was thick and chewy, with a strong scallion aroma, while the egg flavor was milder. However, this combination made the scallion pancake neither too greasy nor heavy, and the rolled-up form added an extra crunchiness to the texture. Of course, a bowl of wonton soup is a must-have. The broth was light and not too salty, with 5 wontons in the soup. Each bite was filled with juicy meat, making it a delightful experience.

In terms of scallion pancakes, Chou Jia is tastier, but Chen Jia has better wonton soup. I still recall the joy of sipping a steaming bowl of wonton soup on a hot June day. However, when it comes to accessibility, Chou Jia is located downtown, which makes parking very inconvenient. I even saw a man in front of me give up the line to save his car from a parking ticket when the police showed up. So, it’s best to walk to Chou Jia, as getting a fine for breakfast just isn’t worth it.
