Tucked away next to Chou Jia Breakfast in Keelung is a unique dessert shop called Sheng Chang Pumpkin Cheesecake. This shop specializes in pumpkin-themed desserts, and the decor is also centered around pumpkins. Even the Styrofoam packaging for the cakes is shaped like pumpkins, making it irresistible to take home.
The pumpkin cheesecake is made in a particularly special way, using a whole pumpkin. First, the pumpkin is steamed until soft, then a hole is cut in the bottom, and the pumpkin flesh is mixed with cheese and stuffed back inside. The final product retains the entire pumpkin’s outer shell and texture, creating a cake with multiple layers of flavor. The softened pumpkin shell can be easily cut with a spoon, and the best way to enjoy it is to take a bite that includes the pumpkin shell, filling, and cheese all at once. The sweetness of the pumpkin perfectly complements the creaminess of the cheese, making for an exquisite combination, especially when paired with a cup of tea.
This pumpkin cheesecake was actually created because the shop boss’s daughter, who wasn’t in good health, disliked pumpkin but loved cheese. So, the boss had the idea to combine the two, and it turned out to be a huge success. Pumpkin is known as the “king of vegetables” due to its rich nutritional content, and regularly eating it can be beneficial for health. If you have kids at home who are picky about eating vegetables, try giving them this pumpkin cheesecake—it’s a delicious way to ensure they’re getting some nutritious benefits while enjoying a tasty treat.
