When talking about Greek cuisine, Mediterranean dishes are renowned for their health benefits. A colleague mentioned a fantastic Greek food on Hastings Street – SOCRATES in the Heights. Since I live nearby, I often pass by this place, and it’s usually not too crowded, probably due to their focus being on delivery. While browsing the menu outside, a customer seated nearby eagerly recommended the restaurant to us, saying it was a must-try. Convinced by the stranger’s enthusiastic praise, we decided to go in and give it a shot.
- Hummus: This classic appetizer is served with crispy pita bread, and the rich, garlicky hummus is perfectly blended for a must-try starter.
- Chicken Souvlaki: The grilled chicken skewers are seasoned with lemon for a light, refreshing taste that isn’t greasy. Served with fragrant rice, seasoned potatoes, and a light salad, this dish offers a simple yet flavorful experience, ideal for those who prioritize healthy, low-salt, and low-oil meals.
- Ekmek Kataifi: This dessert is even better enjoyed as takeout. It features syrup-soaked crispy layers filled with custard, topped with fresh cream, cinnamon, and almonds. Although a bit on the sweet side, it’s richly layered and has a strong cinnamon flavor that makes it a unique treat.
SOCRATES in the Heights specializes in Greek flavors and is primarily a takeout-oriented restaurant, although a few seats are available for dining in. If the heavy meals around the holidays leave you feeling weighed down, consider stopping by for the refreshing Mediterranean tastes of Greek cuisine.
