Medical Services Plan(MSP) is a public health insurance program offered in British Columbia (B.C.), Canada. Commonly known as Canadian health insurance, MSP covers basic medical services, so residents do not have to pay substantial healthcare fees when seeing a doctor in B.C. If you plan to study or immigrate to B.C., applying for MSP is highly recommended to ensure healthcare protection.
How to Apply for MSP?
You can apply through the British Columbia Application for Health and Drug Coverage (AHDC) website. Follow the instructions and fill out the form according to your situation.

Fair PharmaCare
This program helps families reduce prescription drug and medical supply expenses based on household income. The lower the income, the higher the financial assistance.
Supplementary Benefits
These additional healthcare benefits reduce the cost of certain medical services not covered by MSP, aimed at eligible residents.

Working Holiday Visa
Working Holiday Visa applications often fail, as a one-year visa does not meet the residency requirement. It is advisable to purchase international health insurance before leaving your home country.
Study Permit
Study Permit holders are eligible and can expect to receive their MSP card soon. MSP fees for study permit holders are CAD$75 per month.
Pay for MSP Fees
After receiving my MSP card, I moved, missing the email from MSP. Once I updated my address, I learned that I had accumulated CAD$225 in unpaid fees. I registered an account on gov.bc.ca/RSBC, paid online, and switched to email billing to avoid future issues—especially helpful when postal strikes occurred.
